I had never heart about the Chiappa Sisters, but the three sisters seem to be hugely popular in England. Michela, Emanuela and Romina have a site, television show and cookbook and even stole Jamie Oliver’s heart. Michela also looks a bit like the British chef, with her enthusiasm and those “the best, really really easy and super impressive recipe” quotes.
The three sisters are known for their modern translation of traditional Italian family recipes. “Wales and Italy, family and eating” is how they describe their style. Their recipes are now published in their first cookbook ‘Simply Italian’.
The prospect of an Italian cookbook didn’t make me wildly enthusiastic at first. Because how many books full of recipes for a tiramisu, lasagna and “perfect pizza” can one have? But I have to admit: I was quickly sold by the genuine enthusiasm of these three young women. This book immediately made me want to cook Italian dishes. The recipes are fairly simple, but often have lovely variations for more experienced cooks. The lifestyle shots are gorgeous and make you long for an Italian holiday.
I made the puff pastry tart with mascarpone and berries and loved that dish. A simple, but pretty tart with crispy pastry and creamy mascarpone. The Chiappa’s recipe for tiramisu was very similar to my favorite recipe, but used a lot less sugar. A great success, because the taste of the cream and liquor is so much better that way. From now on I will definitely use their recipe.
This book absolutely inspired me to cook more Italian again. I think it’s a great basic Italian cookbook (with recipes for saltimbocca, homemade pasta and affogato for instance), but it’s just as suitable for those looking for Italian dishes with a modern twist (think: crispy polenta with caciotta cheese or porcini risotto with cooked rice). I can therefore wholeheartedly recommend this book.
