Recommended: The Light House, Paarl (South Africa)

I am always on the lookout for restaurants, cafés or hotels that do things slightly different. Where the focus lies on the tiniest details and where you can truly experience something special. Boutique hotel The Light House in South African Paarl ticks all those boxes.

The gorgeous winelands of South Africa are pretty close to Cape Town and happen to be – without exaggerating – one of my very favorite spots on earth. The area is incredibly beautiful, the food is always outstanding and each place is even more romantic than the next. It’s like walking into a wine bottle label. I’ll stop now (but really people, just go!).

The most well known city in the winelands is probably Stellenbosch and Franschhoek is renowned too, but the picturesque city of Paarl is really worth a visit as well. In this environment, it’s all about elegance, romance and a sprinkle of sophistication and that makes The Light House an ideal place to stay.

When you enter the gates of these ‘boutique suites’ you can’t help but notice: every little detail is being taken care of in this place. Very sophisticated owner Darrol (who runs The Light House with his partner Hendrik) comes from the fashion and design industry and that influence is notable. For example in the little library with countless coffee table books, the piles of luxury fresh magazines everywhere (Darrol wants to stimulate people to read instead of focusing on their cell phones) and every room is decorated with fresh roses. The atmosphere is intimate and personal and guests are stimulated to “just be” and enjoy the surroundings.

All suites have their own theme, that’s extended to the smallest detail, with a spacious bathroom, free mini bar and locally made chocolates on your pillow at night. In the morning, breakfast is served on the terrace or in the dining room and consists of no less than six courses. Modesty is the best strategy in this case, but really: that’s difficult with all those delicious items being offered. And if that wasn’t enough, a high tea is served every afternoon, with freshly baked scones and amazing light-as-air éclairs. Afterwards it’s time for some relaxing at the pool, which is very easy on those luscious thick pool bed cushions.

Service in The Light House is extremely friendly, impeccable, sometimes even a bit formal. Every guest is treated like royalty here, so for those wanting to stay in a gorgeous home where the term ‘elegance’ seems to be invented, The Light House is the perfect spot.
