When I received the invitation for a Summer Afternoon Tea at the Amsterdam Waldorf Astoria hotel, I was pleasantly surprised. Because now that I’m pregnant, I have to skip many events, since they’re not really suitable at the moment. Wine tastings, sashimi workshops, steak tartare dinners…all not very convenient for a pregnant lady.

But an afternoon tea or high tea is of course totally pregnancy proof. And because the gorgeous Waldorf Astoria is one of those locations I probably won’t visit with a crying baby soon, I decided to enjoy myself for now.

The Waldorf has been serving an afternoon tea in the elegant Peacock Alley since its opening three years ago, but this temporary summer edition (until the end of August) is something completely different. Filled with all kinds of “ice cream” creations, spectacular sweet and savory dishes and exciting flavors that truly impressed.

Like the welcome cocktail from Earl Grey tea with a touch of elderflower and orange blossom, served in a “cone” with cotton candy on top. Or the Calippo filled with vegetables and a lovely blue cheese dip. Or take the mini Magnum that turned out to be something completely different: filled with a soft raspberry rosewater mousse and yogurt. Also worth mentioning: the little tart with white chocolate, mango and yuzu (pictured below).

Of course, there were also scones involved – some traditions have to be kept intact – in a traditional vanilla and exciting rhubarb version. And let’s not forget about the tea itself, because the Chinese black tea with a hint of rose leaves was amazing.

A homemade mini Cornetto (filled with raspberry and dark chocolate) was the perfect ending to this afternoon. In my opinion, every single dish was worth it and although the portions are very generous, you’re not leaving completely stuffed (although I have to say: I’m eating for two anyways). The full afternoon tea costs 42,50 EUR per person and I think that’s a very fair price for everything you get.

Also, an afternoon tea in such an elegant, luxurious hotel with very attentive service is truly a unique experience. An experience that can just put you next to Jude Law. And I have to say: the tea tasted even better because of it…
